Celebrating the Life and Legacy of Nathaniel Smiley
I will praise thee, O Lord, with my whole heart; I will shew forth all they marvelous works.
Nathaniel Smiley (1946-2019) was born November 9, 1946 to the late George Smiley and Nell
Standberry in Bainbridge, GA.
He was raised in the care of his late uncle and aunt Reverend Aurent and Louvenia Agee. Smiley as he was commonly known was a resident of Mobile, AL and longtime business owner in the City of Prichard. His beautiful and fruitful life came to a close on Tuesday, March 19, 2019 at University Hospital in Mobile, AL.
His lifetime career began as a Seamen for over 15 years after which he opened Smiley’s Package Store
and Wrecker Service in the City of Prichard, AL. It thrived for greater than forty years. Smiley was loved
and admired by many.
He was preceded in death by one sister Yvonne Standberry of Mobile, AL.
Forever cherishing his memories is his loving wife of forty eight years: Mary Alice; one daughter: Takaiya
Renee Boyd of Mobile, AL; one son: Carlos Potts, Sr. of Tampa, FL; one sister: Betty (Anthony) Brown
of Tampa, FL; six brothers: Willie Earl Smiley, Micheal (Carla) Standberry, and Charles Standberry all of
Mobile, AL, Wilbert (Edith) Standberry and Robert (Carmen) Standberry all of Tampa, FL., Richard
(Christy) Standberry of Birmingham, AL; five grandchildren: Glenn and Bryson Boyd of Mobile, AL.,
Carlos Jr, Marlo, and Carmelo Potts of Tampa, FL; a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
We would also like to acknowledge Micheal Turner a close family friend whom Smiley treated and
admired like a son.
His remains will lie in state on Friday, March 29, 2019 from 5pm - 8pm at Small’s Mortuary, Mobile, Alabama. A visitation will be held on Saturday, March 30, 2019 from 9am until the 11am funeral hour at Nazaree Full Gospel Church, 1695 West I-65 Service Road, Mobile, Alabama. Interment will follow in Gethsemane Cemetery, Mobile.
