Obituary for Jane Mitchell (Jackson)

Mrs. Jane Jackson Mitchell, 101 years of age, departed this life on Monday, April 29, 2019 at Mobile Infirmary Hospital.

Mrs. Jane J. Mitchell was born February 25, 1918 in Koenton, AL, to the late Willie (Lena Washington) Gaston Mitchell.

She was united in marriage on July 11, 1936 to the late Arthella Mitchell for 69 years until his death on September 25, 2005. Together they had 13 children. Preceeded her in death were five children; Wilhelmenia , Mary Anna, Ida Lee, Arthur and Albert; five brothers; M. L., Milton, Void, Dan, and Charlie; three sisters. Ivy, Ida Lee, and Bessie.

Jane attended Rosenwald School in Koenton, AL at six years old in the winter of 1924. Many years passed before she decided to go back and get her GED. She took 32 lessons in Nursing and received
her certificate. She attended Bishop State Community College taking evening classes for approximately three years majoring in Elementary Education.

Jane began working at the Washington County Hospital in 1961, and worked there for six years. Jane and her husband moved from Koenton, AL, to Chatom, AL in 1962. In 1969, she began working for the U. S. Postal Service and remained there for 15 years. Jane served as a substitute teacher for the Washington County Public School System from 1981-1984. She volunteered with the Chatom Nutrition Center for many years,

“She was a loving, caring, virtuous, direct and nurturing woman of God. She had a heart for people,”

Jane was also known as “Mother Mitchell”, “Auntie Jane”, “Mrs. Janie”, but familiar to all as "Big Mama". She was a born again believer and accepted Christ as her personal Savior as a young woman and lived her life as a Christian. Jane received the Holy Spirit under two traveling Ministers from Lake Charles, LA in August 24, 1951 at age 33. Later she became a member of the Church of God Deliverance in 1956 under the leadership of Bishop W. L. McNeil. The Lord moved upon her to start having services in her home in Chatom, AL. Service was moved into a tent and from a tent to a building. In 1982 she became founder and Pastor of the Church of God Deliverance for 33 years. She was a preacher, teacher, mother, grandmother and a virtuous woman. The life she preached was the life she lived.
Her ministry has touched countless lives. She has counseled many couples, young people, the elderly, and anyone that was in need of her services.

She leaves behind five sons: Willie Mitchell; Woodie (Carmen) Mitchell; Billy (Glenda) Mitchell; Raymond (Ann Catherine) Mitchell, and Roland Mitchell; four daughters: Mary (John) Wells, Alishann (Alonzo)Simon, Patricia (Ronald) Tinsley, Irma Keys.; one daughter-in-law, Joe Dee Mitchell; two sisters-in-law, Carrie Taldon and Annie Zell Mitchell; two brothers-in-law: William (WT) Mitchell and Jonathan Hicks, 100 grandchildren, 163 great-grands,107 great-great-grands, one great-great-great-grand and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
