Obituary for Elizabeth Jean Hunter

Elizabeth “Betty” Jean Burnett Hunter, a native of Mobile, transitioned Saturday, February 23, 2019 at a local hospital. She was born March 6, 1943 to the late Norris and Ernestine Phifer Burnett. Betty was Christened at St. Joseph’s Chapel at Springhill College. She grew up in the Springhill community, was a 1960 graduate Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic School and studied at both the Mobile Branch and Montgomery campuses of Alabama State University.
Betty was married to Willie P. Hunter, Jr., and to this union, four children were born. Betty was a loving and doting mother to her children and “second mom” to many. Always willing to help out, her doors were always open for all the neighborhood children. Her magnetic smile and personality provided an source of safety and comfort to all who crossed her path.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband. She leaves to cherish her memories two daughters, Gretchen Hunter Garner and Daphne L. Hunter, two sons, Sergeant Major (Ret.) Keith P. (Karen) Hunter and Todd V. (Zaneta) Hunter; sister, Mary Katherine (Alonzo, Jr.) Yelling; granddaughters Jewel Hunter, Leah Hunter, Cidney Garner, and Kristin Hunter; grandson, Gabriel Hunter; great-grandchildren, Ja’niyla, Justice, and Journey Bloom; devoted nieces Carolyn (Errol) Watts, Nikia Mack, and Daveda Mack; nephew, Alonzo (Brenda) Yelling, III, mother-in-law, Johnnie Mae Hunter, longtime friends Doretha Wells, Mary F. Craig, Doris Kirksey, Wendy McCovery, Rose Lofton, and a host of friends and relatives.
